The mayor of the South African city of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, has been dismissed this Friday from her position after the tight victory of a motion of censure led by the African National Congress (ANC) – the South African government party, in opposition within of the governing board of the metropolis– after accusing her of negligence during her tenure of office.
The motion against Phalatse has received the support of 139 votes in favor to 132 against and culminates weeks of attacks by the ANC against the mayor and highest representative in the city of the Democratic Alliance party.
The latest criticism came Tuesday from regional ANC spokesman Chris Vondo, who accused Phalatse of “lying about the city’s economic situation,” in particular about “the chaos of national television rates.”
Vondo also singled out Phalatse for appointing several municipal officials accused of corruption by the ANC, such as infrastructure and environmental services official Michael Sun, who earlier this month denied claims that an arrest warrant was issued against him in connection with an animal trade investigation in Taiwan.
The president of the city council and also a member of the Democratic Alliance, Vasco Da Gama, had already been dismissed in a previous motion at the beginning of the month. The ANC’s Dada Morero has been appointed the city’s new acting mayor, reports South African News24.
