BRUSSELS, 30 Sep. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The European Union has demanded this Friday that the main political actors in Lebanon comply with the calendar to hold presidential elections after the vote to elect the country’s new president was postponed this Thursday because no candidate has obtained the necessary votes.
The session was also postponed indefinitely after the loss of the quorum after several parliamentarians left the building.
“The EU underlines the importance of respecting the Lebanese Constitution and the constitutional calendar with regard to the organization of the presidential elections, which represent a key milestone for the future of Lebanon,” the EU External Action Service said in a statement. .
In this sense, community diplomacy has urged political actors to “work together to ensure the successful completion of the presidential election process within the required timeframe”, and has reached out to help the Lebanese people out of the current crisis.
Lebanon is mired in a serious political, economic and social crisis aggravated by the war in Syria, the coronavirus pandemic and the explosions registered on August 4, 2020 in the port of the capital, Beirut, which left more than 220 dead and huge material damage.
