On the podium of mobile games that have generated the most revenue over the last two years we have Honor of Kings, a MOBA developed by TiMi Studios (Tencent) that has raised 5,500 million dollars, followed by PUBG Mobile with 4,900 millions of dollars. PUBG is owned by Krafton, but the developer of the mobile version is LightSpeed & Quantum Studio, a team owned by Tencent that also publishes the game in some regions. In the third position we have the aforementioned Genshin Impact.
If we exclude the Chinese market, Genshin Impact is the second game in which players have spent the most money in the last two years, with a gross of 2.5 billion dollars between the App Store and Google Play. The miHoYo title is above Candy Crush Saga developed by King (Activision Blizzard), which is confirmed with 2.3 billion dollars, and behind Roblox, which generated more than 2.5 billion dollars.
Most of Genshin Impact’s revenue comes from China, which accounts for 33% of the total gross at $1.2 billion. Sensor Tower does not have data from third-party Android stores, so this figure is for iOS only. Japan ranks second with 24% of revenue, while players from the United States have contributed 17% of global spending.
Looking at quarterly revenue, Genshin Impact defies the downward trend in the industry for now. During the first and second quarters of 2022, mobile games saw revenue decline by 5% and 7%, respectively, while Genshin Impact increased revenue by 16% and 28%, respectively. However, it appears that in the third quarter gaming revenue will decline from last year’s quarterly record of $616 million.
