In September 2020 we learned that Crunchyroll and Adult Swim were working on an anime of Shenmue. Although it is not a very popular franchise, the project managed to become a reality and at the beginning of the current year, fans were able to enjoy the 13 episodes of the first season. Today there is bad news for all of them, since there were plans to continue the animation, but they fell apart and not because of low popularity.
The account that monitors the status of Cartoon Network and other channels revealed that Shenmue: The Animation was removed from the official site of Adult Swim, one of the managers of the project. Jason DeMarco, senior vice president of anime at Warner Discovery (owner of Adult Swim) soon spoke about it and confirmed the bad news.

Why won’t there be Shenmue: The Animation will not continue with Season 2?
Interestingly, DeMarco offered more details, particularly of Shenmuealthough they were disappointing. We say this because it was revealed that after these events there will apparently be no Season 2 of Shenmue: The Animation.
The worst thing is that the anime did not do badly; on the contrary, DeMarco confessed that he did well enough that they were “preparing for Season 2”.
So what caused the project to be cut short? Well, it’s something foreign to him. In the middle of this year, the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery took place and unfortunately this had repercussions not only in the operation of the companies, but also in their services and products. The effects were so great that even a movie of batgirl and many feared that some video game projects might not come to fruition as well.
In case you missed it: are there plans for a new game Shenmue?
Unfortunately, Shenmue: The Animation (just like the others mentioned) was one of the affected anime projects.
On behalf of the promotional department, DeMarco commented that they loved the show and did their best for it: “it sucks”, commented the producer about the circumstances that made it difficult to continue the series; however, he did not rule out that the project could ever be resumed: “perhaps one day.”
Without going into details, we mention that Season 1 ended with the insinuation that Ryo’s adventure was not over yet, but that he would continue to seek revenge for his father.
Sorry guys. This happened. You can still watch all of the anime on Crunchyroll and it will still be available as digital downloads. And yes, it’s looking like no S2 of Shenmue, even though sadly- it did well enough that we were gearing up for S2. Maybe one day… https://t.co/WpM3O6NcSC
