Brazil’s leading presidential candidate, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, said Tuesday that he has been informed by the United States that the country plans to recognize the election result on the first day after the vote, which is scheduled for October 2nd.
Lula is in the polls ahead of current President Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right populist who has claimed that the polls are biased, that the courts favor his opponent and that Brazil’s electronic vote is riddled with fraud, without providing evidence about.
“The United States is worried, it wants to recognize the result on the first day,” Lula said at a campaign rally, without giving further details.
Last week, two sources told Reuters that US diplomats had assured Lula that they would quickly recognize the winner of the vote, seeking to avoid any attempt to challenge a legitimate result or sow chaos after the elections.
Critics fear that Bolsonaro will continue the example of the former US president Donald Trump and refuses to accept an electoral defeat.
