The United Nations General Assembly approved on Tuesday the extension of the mandate of the current UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, another two and a half years from July 1, 2023 to the end of 2025.
“Congratulations to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, for the extension of his mandate by the UN General Assembly to carry out his essential work in the service of people forced to flee around the world” , said the official Twitter account of the High Commissioner.
For his part, Grandi thanked the member states, as well as the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, and all his co-workers “for their trust and support”. “The challenges grow, but at UNHCR we remain committed to protecting people who are forced to flee, and this makes me proud,” she said on his official Twitter profile.
The current High Commissioner was elected in 2015 to replace Guterres, who held the position for ten years. In his previous professional career, Grandi was commissioner of the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Grandi was also the United Nations Deputy Representative for Afghanistan and worked on several occasions for UNHCR in Sudan, Syria, Turkey and Iraq. In addition, he conducted emergency refugee operations in Kenya, Benin, Ghana, Liberia, the Great Lakes region of Central Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Yemen.
