GDP falls in East Asia and the South Pacific

Other news of the day: China frees human rights lawyer Zhou Shifeng. Vietnam prepares for the arrival of Typhoon Noru. India will participate in a naval exercise with the United States, Japan and Australia in November. Everyone wants Turkish armed drones. Protests in Russia over the “partial mobilization” ordered by Putin. Military tension between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan eases.

EAST ASIA – PACIFIC

This year is expected a slowdown in economic growth in East Asia and the South Pacific. This is the analysis of the World Bank, according to which the combined GDP of the macro-region will increase by 3.2%, compared to an April forecast that placed it at 5% and last year’s figure of +7.2%. The decline is largely due to the economic crisis in China.

CHINA

After seven years in prison, they released the human rights lawyer zhou shifeng. He had been arrested in 2015 in the “709” case, a police and judicial action that led to the arrest of more than 300 lawyers and activists. Zhou was the first to face the corresponding trial.

VIETNAM

The country is bracing for the impact of Typhoon Noru, which has already devastated the Philippines with massive flooding (and eight deaths). Wind gusts reach 183 km/h and are expected to reach the Vietnamese coast tomorrow. Subsequently, the bad weather will move towards Thailand.

INDIA

Within the framework of QUAD, the Indian Navy will participate from November 8 to 18 in the second phase of the Malabar military exercises along with the United States, Japan and Australia. The activities will take place off the coast of Yokosuka (Japan). Delhi will be present with a frigate, a corvette and a submarine “hunting” plane. The Modi government is increasingly concerned about Chinese naval maneuvers in the Indian Ocean.

TURKEY

Malaysia and Indonesia are interested in acquiring turkish armed drones of the type used – with great success – by Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Japan could also be a buyer of the Baykars, while the United Arab Emirates has already acquired 20 of them.

RUSSIA

In Dagestan, the Caucasian region of Russia, local guerrillas spread messages through Telegram, calling on the population to oppose the mobilization. They also take to the streets and use Molotov cocktails against the barracks where they lock up the inhabitants who were summoned. In the capital, MakhaĨkala, Putin’s portrait was burned in public.

TAJIKISTAN-UZBEKISTAN

First result of negotiations between Tajiks and Kyrgyz for peace on the border. Eight posts located on both sides of the border have ceased their activities, according to sources in Bishkek (not confirmed by Dushanbe). However, both sides have withdrawn much of the weaponry deployed on the front lines.
