The Socialist Party of Portugal has expressed this Monday its “suspicion and concern” for the victory of the extreme right in the Italian elections last Sunday.
“Today more than ever we must maintain attention and vigilance to defend democratic values,” the deputy secretary general of the Socialist Party, Joao Torres, posted on Twitter. “When the democratic right normalizes the extreme right, in the end it ends up being led by it,” he added.
Torres has pointed out that “in a geopolitical context marked by uncertainty and very demanding global challenges, yesterday’s results can only be faced with suspicion and concern”, according to the Portuguese newspaper ‘Diário de Notícias’.
Last Saturday, Torres himself warned the Portuguese Social Democratic Party, heir to the Christian Democratic tradition, of the danger of “courting the extreme right” for its support for the far-right Basta party’s candidacy for vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic.
