Following the success of the Agriculture Deputies Meeting (ADM) in Yogyakarta, the Agriculture Working Group (AWG) will hold the Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture (WMA). In this event, the Ministers of Agriculture of the G20 members will meet and discuss issues related to the agricultural sector and world food security. The event will be held in Bali from September 27 to 29.

Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said G20 agriculture ministers will discuss a joint commitment on sustainable agriculture and food systems, in line with the theme of the 2022 G20 Agriculture Working Group (AWG).

“We agreed to bring up the issue of balancing production and trade to meet food for all,” said the minister.

For his part, the director of the Office of Public Relations and Information, Kuntoro Boga Andri, stated that the discussions at the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting will focus on this issue, in the hope that it will support the implementation of three priority issues proposed by Indonesia.

“We hope that the meeting will contribute to our joint commitment through a communique, and support the implementation of three main priority issues in the agriculture sector proposed by Indonesia,” he explained.

Priority topics

The main themes proposed by Indonesia include promoting resilient and sustainable agriculture and food systems; promoting open, fair, predictable, transparent and non-discriminatory agricultural trade to ensure the availability and affordability of food for all; and innovative agribusiness through digital agriculture to improve farmers’ livelihoods in rural areas.

“These top priority issues have been discussed several times at MPs’ meetings, and will be finalized at the MPs’ talk on September 26,” Kuntoro said.

“We hope that the joint commitment elaborated in the MOA will contribute significantly to supporting the post-pandemic economic recovery. We certainly hope that these commitments will also promote the resilience of global agriculture and the food system,” he concluded.
