The harsh duel between Lula and Bolsonaro for power in Brazil

First modification:

At first glance, the duel in the Brazilian elections on October 2 may seem classic between the right and the left in Latin America, but there are several factors that invite us not to think about it: two old acquaintances with long histories that are part of an extreme polarization, the spirit of voters before the contest and, above all, the fear of the unpredictable reactions of the Brazilian far-right president in case he loses, add uncertainty to these two-round elections.

We analyze the duel between the leftist Lula and the far-right Bolsonaro a few days before the first round of the elections in Brazil. We wonder if the advantage that the polls give Lula is definitive, but also what happens to the religious vote or the female vote after four years with Bolsonaro in power. Three out of four Brazilian voters also say they feel “afraid” to express their political ideas at this time. A climate of political violence that we will try to analyze with our guests:

– David Gormezano, journalist at France 24, former correspondent in Brazil.

– Paloma Varón, political scientist and journalist in the Brazilian newsroom of RFI.

– Guillaume Asskari, journalist specializing in Latin America.
