Shovel Knight is one of the games that managed to earn a place in the indie market and promote it. The classic style of the franchise is rooted in 2D environments, but its studio, Yacht Club Games, is working on its first 3D title and has just revealed that it worked on a new engine for more than 5 years to create it.
Years ago we learned of Yacht Club Games’ plans to develop a new 3D title, which would be a novelty for the studio considering that their games are in 2D, including Mine the Hollowerwhich was announced earlier this year and met its funding goal on Kickstarter.
Although news has been shared about the future of Shovel Knight Y Mine the Hollower, as well as titles that they will release with their publishing division, Yacht Club Games has not revealed any further details of this mysterious unannounced 3D game. However, little by little we learn more about him.

Yacht Club Games’ new 3D game will use an engine created in 6 years
Today, for example, an interview with Ars Technica in which the director of Mine the HollowerAlec Faulkner, confessed that the engine with which they are creating this game was secretly developed within the studio during the past “5 or 6 years” and that it was made from scratch.
What is most striking is that Faulkner revealed that this engine was also used to create at par Mine the Hollowerwhich is strange, since this latest title is a 2D side-scrolling game that evokes classic handheld games from Zelda in 2D, like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.
In case you missed it: Shovel Knight Dig will debut this Friday.
However, Faulkner refers that “under the hood, [el código de Mina the Hollower] has more in common with breath of the wild that Link’s Awakening“, in the sense that the title could not run on original Game Boy Color hardware, but is more complex than it seems. For example, the title has a parallax effect to project layers in depth.
Unfortunately, no more was revealed about the 3D project that Yacht Club Games is secretly working on. So we will have to be patient and wait for its official announcement.
