The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has shown this Wednesday his satisfaction with the exchange of more than 250 prisoners between Ukraine and Russia, describing the agreement as “no small feat”.
“It is no small feat, but much remains to be done to alleviate the suffering caused by the war in Ukraine. (Guterres) commends the efforts of both parties,” said the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, in a statement. Stephane Dujarric.
In this regard, he stressed that the United Nations will continue to support any additional effort that may be undertaken in the context of the war in Ukraine, including new prisoner exchanges.
In addition, Guterres has reiterated the need for international law to be fully respected, including international humanitarian law, with regard to the treatment of prisoners of war.
Earlier this Thursday, the Ukrainian authorities announced a prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia.
Russia has given Ukraine 215 soldiers, of which 108 belong to the Azov Battalion and another ten are foreign volunteers, in exchange for 55 Russian soldiers and the pro-Russian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk.
