AMD launches its Ryzen and Athlon 7020 Series processors with Zen 2 cores and RDNA 2 graphics for budget laptops

AMD has now launched its new “Mendocinio” processors for cheap entry-level laptops as Computex announced this past. The new family of Ryzen 7020 processors focuses on increasing the capabilities of cheap laptops, providing them with autonomy much higher than the current ones, with more performance and graphics integrated new generation RDNA 2, although to maintain a tight cost they have reused the Zen 2 architecture present in the third generation Ryzen.

The idea behind these processors is to improve the general performance of the cheapest laptops on the market. As explained by AMD itself, this type of equipment usually comes with very low autonomies, limited performance, very high startup and application execution times, with old integrated graphics and with functions not adapted to the latest market technologies available in systems such as Windows. eleven.

The models launched today are the AMD Ryzen 5 7520U, AMD Ryzen 3 7320U and AMD Athlon Gold 7220, all of them with Zen 2 architecture cores and RDNA 2 graphics.

They are manufactured, yes, following the 6-nanometer process and with support for low-power LPDDR5 memories. They feature up to 4 cores and 8 threads with maximum speeds of up to 4.3GHz and 6MB cache, while the integrated GPU offers an AMD Radeon 610M RDNA 2.

AMD promises autonomies of up to 12 hours in typical entry-level laptops, along with performance up to 80% higher than models such as the Core i3-115G4. RDNA 2 graphics should show a more than significant performance jump compared to the first generation RDNA architecture or Intel’s Iris Xe. The tests we have done with processors like the Ryzen 7 6800U showed a big jump in performance, although in that case we had 8 RDNA2 compute units in their 680M, and the Radeon 610M would only have 2 units.

All this with the latest security technologies and support for voice recognition, fast charging, and Windows 11.

They also lack advanced support for AV1 decoding through their dedicated graphics card, capable of playing casual 720p games at 60+ FPS like DOPA or LOL.

The new family of Ryzen and Athlon 7020 series processors already use the new AMD nomenclature that we exclusively announced a few days ago. In fact, thanks to it and seeing the names of the new processors we can make clear some of the specifications they have.

For example, the AMD Ryzen 5 7520U, means that it belongs to the 7th generation of 2023, to the Ryzen 5 range, with Zen 2 architecture and to the mainstream variant. The U at the end tells us about a configurable TDP of 8 to 15 W.

Later in 2023, new laptop processors with more powerful specifications will arrive with the 7030, 7035, 7040 and 7045 series.

The first laptops with AMD RYZEN and ATHLON 7020 Series processors will arrive during this last quarter of the year from manufacturers such as ASUS, Lenovo, HP or Acer.
