3,300-year-old burial cave discovered by accident in Israel

TEL AVIV, Sep. 19 (DPA/EP) –

The Israel Antiquities Authority confirmed on Sunday the accidental discovery of a burial cave some 3,300 years old.

According to the competent authorities, the cave, discovered in the Palmahil National Park, in the Mediterranean, dates from the time of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II and contains dozens of ancient objects.

“The cave, exposed by a mechanical excavator in the course of development work, has been visited for the first time since it was sealed, at the time of Ramses II,” officials said.

The Antiquities Authority has reported that among the objects in the burial chamber are “intact ceramic and bronze artifacts” that are believed to have been placed in the cave exactly as they are now found.

According to Eli Jannai, an archaeologist at the Antiquities Authority, the find is “a once-in-a-lifetime discovery” because according to scientists, the camera can also provide a complete picture of burial customs in the Bronze Age.

Scientists are now planning the investigation and protection of the site, which they described as a “feast for the archaeological world and for the ancient history of the land of Israel.”
