A total of 36 people have died and 129 have been injured in Kyrgyzstan as a result of clashes on the border with Tajikistan in the latest armed conflict that started on Friday, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health reported at 10:00 a.m. (local time). of this Saturday.
Up to 140,000 people have been forced to move to safer places this weekend, according to the local radio station Radio Azattyk. The names of the people who have died have not been officially announced, although relatives are publishing them on social networks and spreading the information in their hands.
The deputy speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament, Alisher Kozuev, announced a ceasefire after a first failed attempt that collapsed within minutes after the outbreak of new fighting. However, once again the agreements would have been violated, as quoted by the newspaper ‘Vecherniy Bishkek’, detailing that the Tajik side would have opened fire with small arms and group weapons against the border guards.
Tensions on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan escalated on Wednesday when Tajik border guard units penetrated an undefined area of the border near the Bulak Bashi area of Kyrgyzstan’s Batken region and “took up fighting positions.” The Kyrgyz military requested that they leave the area, after which the Tajik officers opened fire. In addition, armed clashes took place in the Kak Sai and Pasky Aryk areas of the Batken region.
The border between the two countries, which extends for more than 970 kilometers, has been the scene of various clashes in recent years due to the fact that several points are not delimited, which causes disputes between Bishkek and Dushambé over the control of said territories. .
This lack of clear demarcation has led to disputes over the use of land and water resources, with frequent clashes between border guards from one country and another and brawls between the communities that were separated after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
