The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced this Saturday that the fourth damaged power line connecting the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant with the external network has been restored, so it already has electricity supply.
The plant has been paralyzed since September 11, when the last active reactor was turned off. Now it has again the supply of 750 kilovolts from the fourth line that was damaged in the fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces, as reported by the IAEA itself.
This electrical supply is essential to facilitate the cooling of the reactors and therefore their safety, as well as “other essential safety functions”, the IAEA has pointed out in a statement.
The restored line was lost two weeks ago, so the plant relied on its own power and on emergency lines connected to a nearby thermal power plant.
With the restoration achieved on Friday afternoon by the engineers, there are already four main supply lines for the maintenance of the six reactors of the plant, all of them in cold shutdown. Since September 5, the plant has not fed electricity into the network.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian national company Energoatom has reported the shipment of spare parts for the repair of the plant’s electricity lines and fuel for the plant’s diesel generators that serve as emergency supply.
