Syria denounces the death of five soldiers after an alleged Israeli attack on Damascus airport

Sep. 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least five Syrian soldiers have died during the early hours of this Saturday as a result of a bombing that the Israeli Armed Forces would have carried out at the Damascus International Airport, as reported by the Syrian Army.

Around 0:45 a.m. (local time, 11:45 p.m. Spanish peninsular time), Israel would have launched an air attack with rockets from Lake Tiberias towards the Damascus International Airport, 240 kilometers northeast of Israeli territory, according to the Syrian agency SANA.

The alleged attack would have also reached several points south of the city of Damascus, although the air defense means of the Syrian Armed Forces would have shot down most of the missiles.

“The aggression has caused the death of five soldiers as well as some material losses,” a military source told the aforementioned agency.

Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes against Syrian territory despite Damascus’ numerous complaints to the United Nations Security Council, stating that these actions infringe its sovereignty and threaten regional stability.

The Israeli authorities justify these attacks by arguing that the objective is to prevent the establishment of Iranian bases in the country and the sending of weapons to the Lebanese Shiite militia party Hezbollah by the Iranian authorities, which support Damascus in the framework of the war that broke out in 2011.
