Sep. 16 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Greek authorities have intercepted two Turkish unmanned devices this Friday when they were flying over the island of Kinaros, in the Aegean Sea, without Turkey having ruled on what happened, amid the rise in tensions and the crossing of accusations between the two countries. During the last months.
According to information collected by the AMNA news agency, the drones have broken into Greek airspace around 1:20 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. (local time) without presenting a flight plan, after which they were identified and intercepted by the forces greeks.
The incident comes just three days after Turkey’s Defense Minister Hulusi Akar accused the Greek government of escalating tension with “provocations” despite Ankara’s attempts to prevent a worsening of relations and has branded the policy Hellenic diplomat of “hypocrite”.
Turkey, a member of NATO for more than 70 years, has criticized the actions and rhetoric of the Greek authorities in recent years, especially when it came to militarizing some islands near the Turkish coast – which were demilitarized following the treaty signed between both–. For its part, Athens has charged against Ankara’s actions in the area.
Tension has increased in recent months in the eastern Mediterranean area as Greece and Turkey engage in a maritime dispute over hydrocarbon exploration in the area. Both countries are also at odds over Cyprus.
