The year is on track to double the total figures of 2021, according to estimates by the British Government
July 1 () –
More than 3,000 people have risked their lives in June by crossing the dangerous migratory route of the English Channel, in what is a monthly record for 2022, a year in which arrivals could even double the figures of the previous year.
France and the United Kingdom have been discussing for months how to stop the migratory passage through the English Channel, without any result. In fact, this past Tuesday night, French rescue services acted to remove 84 migrants from the waters, in danger of death.
In the last 30 days, a total of 3,136 people have crossed the channel in 76 boats, up from the previous record 3,074 in March, and for a total of 12,690 journeys since the beginning of the year, according to figures from the British Home Office.
The absolute monthly record occurred in November 2021, which registered 6,971 entries. However, the provisional total for 2022 is already five times the figures for the same period in 2020 (2,493) and double those of 2021 (5,917).
A total of 51,824 people have crossed the channel since 2018. More than half of them (28,526) did so in 2021, still far from the 120,441 people who risked the Mediterranean route that year, either by land or sea.
