Azerbaijan offers Armenia a humanitarian ceasefire

Sep. 14 () –

The Azerbaijani authorities have offered Armenia a humanitarian ceasefire after the clashes that have taken place since last morning on the border between the two countries and in which more than 150 soldiers have already died, most of them from the Armenian side.

The Azeri Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, met this Wednesday with the Russian representative for international cultural cooperation, Mijail Shvidkoi, with whom he discussed the cooperation agenda between Baku and Moscow.

Among other aspects, the Azeri diplomatic representative has reported to the Russian envoy the current situation on the border with Armenia and has reported that Baku has offered Yerevan a humanitarian ceasefire, while at the same time asserting that Azerbaijan will not interested in escalating tensions.

For his part, Shvidkoi has shown his hope that the clashes will stop as soon as possible and has offered to mediate and support cooperative relations in the humanitarian and cultural fields, according to the Azeri daily ‘Musavat’.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have already staged a confrontation in 2020 to take control of Nagorno Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been a focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.

Hostilities between the two countries lasted for six weeks and left thousands dead. They finally ceased when the two countries reached a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, allowing Russian peacekeepers to settle in Nagorno-Karabakh for a period of five years.
