The Bank of England has clarified that banknotes with the face of Queen Elizabeth II are still valid despite her death, which has given rise to the accession to the throne of her eldest son and heir, the already King Charles III.
“The current banknotes that show the image of Her Majesty the Queen will continue to be legal tender,” reads a note from the financial regulator, which provides for “new announcements” once the mourning period has ended.
Elizabeth II was the first monarch to appear on banknotes, initially on the 1 pound banknote eight years after she became queen, in 1960. Her face has become widespread over the following decades also in the pockets of British citizens.
