Australia and New Zealand appeal to the historical importance of Elizabeth II

Sep. 8 () –

The governments of Australia and New Zealand, member countries of the Commonwealth, have lamented this Thursday the death of their queen, Elizabeth II, with messages of condolences in which they have recognized her historical role also in the antipodes of London.

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stressed that many have not known “a world without Queen Elizabeth II” as she has spent “an exceptional seven decades” on the throne. During this time, she has been “a rare comforting constant” in a world of “rapid change.”

“Today marks the end of an era, the closing of the second Elizabethan era. This moment of mourning will pass, but the deep respect and warm appreciation that Australians have always held for Her Majesty will never go away,” Albanese said.

Her New Zealand counterpart, Jacinda Ardern, has remembered Elizabeth II as “a highly admired and respected monarch”, an “extraordinary” leader who has made her “commitment” to the entire Commonwealth clear throughout her reign.
