Sep. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Supreme Court of Kenya has rejected the appeals presented by the political opposition and has endorsed the victory of the vice president, William Ruto, in the August elections, with a ruling unanimously supported by the seven magistrates that make up the court.
The judges have found no evidence to prove the irregularities denounced by Ruto’s main rival, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which will allow the new presidential term to start as planned.
The judges have ruled out that the system could have been manipulated or fraud attributable to the Electoral Commission. “Fraud is a very serious crime and must be proven beyond all doubt,” explained the president of the Supreme Court, Martha Koome, during the reading of the sentence, according to the newspaper ‘The Nation’.
The sentence, on which there is no appeal, assumes that “the president-elect obtained more than 50 percent of the votes cast” on election day and that, with nothing to prevent it, Ruto can take office on September 13 . He got 50.5 percent of the vote, compared to 48.85 percent for Odinga.
