Chile is facing one of the most momentous decisions in its recent history. Citizens must approve or not the proposal for a new constitution, a draft that updates the Magna Carta of that country and includes issues of current situations and social demands that come from decades ago, such as representation of minorities, diversity, indigenous peoples and a proposal of a new system of economic production. What will the Chileans decide? We analyze it in our program.
The debate for a new constitution has been going on since 2019 and has been an argument to sharpen the already deep polarization that Chilean society is experiencing around the issue. That is why the decision of this Sunday, September 4, generates a lot of expectation.
How informed are Chileans about the draft constitution? Why did this plebiscite become a kind of referendum on the management of President Gabriel Boric? What are the probable scenarios for Chile if the result of the referendum is the approval or not of the draft?
The constitutional referendum in Chile is our topic of analysis in this edition of El Debate and we address it together with our guests:
– Manuel José Ossandón Lira, lawyer and former constitutional constituent.
– Claudia Barahona Chang, member of the Political Commission of the Socialist Party.
