PRAGUE, Sep. 3 (DPA/EP) –
Some 70,000 people, according to the police balance, have demonstrated this Saturday in Wenceslas Square in Prague to protest against the policy of the Czech Government under the slogan “Czech Republic first”.
Citizen organizations and initiatives have called the march with the support of extra-parliamentary and opposition parties. Czech flags and banners predominated in the rally due to the high price of energy and calling for the end of EU sanctions against Russia due to their consequences for the Czech economy and population.
There have also been messages against NATO and the Czech Republic’s membership in the EU in a protest supported by far-right formations and also by parties such as the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia.
The official statement of the call calls for an agreement with Russia to acquire cheap natural gas and more support for Czech companies. It also rejects the permanent settlement of Ukrainian refugees on Czech soil.
The liberal-conservative Prime Minister Petr Fiala has singled out the conveners for their “pro-Russian” stance and has denounced that they are detrimental to the country’s interests.
“It is clear that the Russian propaganda and disinformation campaign is still present in our country and that there are those who are believing it,” he argued.
