The pro-Russian authorities of the city of Energodar, which houses the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, announced this Saturday the suspension of the supply of electricity to the Ukrainian network due to “technical difficulties”. The plant contributes a fifth of the country’s electricity consumption.

“Specialists stationed there have reported that due to technical characteristics the electricity generated by the reactors varies. The supply of electricity to the territories controlled by Ukraine has been suspended due to technical difficulties,” the pro-Russian civil-military administration of Ukraine has indicated. Enerdogar on his Telegram channel, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

Specifically, they denounce the damage caused by Ukrainian bombing that is already being treated by specialists. This is how they have reported damage to two of the plant’s lines.

Reactors 5 and 6 of the plant continue to function normally and generate about 900 or 1,000 megawatts. Radiation is at normal levels.

The Russian and Ukrainian authorities have accused each other of endangering the Zaporizhia plant with artillery bombardments and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has sent an inspection mission to assess the situation.

This same Saturday Moscow has reported a night attempt by Ukrainian forces to assault the nuclear power plant that would have been repelled and in which 47 members of the Ukrainian amphibious assault group would have died.

The Zaporizhia plant is the largest in Europe and has six reactors commissioned between 1984 and 1995. It has been controlled by Russian forces since March this year, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.
