The IAEA mission collects “important information” in its first inspection of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, carried out this Thursday a first inspection of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant and reported that, in a few hours of work, his team has managed to collect “a lot of important information”.

Grossi has also indicated that he has seen “key” elements during this first inspection after arriving at the plant on Thursday, as reported by the Ukrainian state energy operator, Energoatom, as reported by the Ukrinform news agency.

The director general of the IAEA has left the nuclear plant around 6:00 p.m. (local time). “Most of the members of the delegation left the premises with him,” Energoatom explained.

At least five representatives of the IAEA mission — out of a total of 14 members — would remain at the Zaporizhia plant, and they are unloading work material and will remain there until at least September 3.

The IAEA’s arrival at the plant comes after Ukraine has accused Russian forces of launching airstrikes along the route established by the UN agency’s team of experts. In fact, the mayor of Energodar, Dimitro Orlov, has assured that there has been “constant bombing” since early in the morning.

After the first analysis of the situation at the plant, the IAEA is expected to establish itself at the plant permanently with the aim of “stabilizing the situation” and being able to “provide reliable, impartial and neutral regular updates”.
