MADRID Jan. 16 () –
Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd announced this Wednesday from Bern her resignation from office, a decision that comes amid criticism of procurement projects for the Swiss Army.
“Federal Councilor Viola Amherd has announced her resignation from the government, which will take effect on March 31, 2025,” reads a brief statement published by the Swiss Government on its profile on the social network X.
In a press conference, he justified his decision by saying that after 30 years of political work “it was time to pass the baton.” He has also said that “the growing polarization in political discourse” is increasingly “problematic” for the democratic system.”
Amherd, affiliated with the center-right political party El Centro, held the country’s Presidency in 2024, a role that rotates among the seven ministers each year.
