Bishop Nikanor of the Serbian Orthodox Church welcomes the cancellation of Europride

The European Union delegation in Serbia has condemned the cancellation of the parade for the rights of the LGBT community, which was scheduled for the third week of September in Belgrade, the country’s capital, and which will not be held due to the current crisis with Kosovo, the authorities have argued.
“The EU supports equality and rejects any form of discrimination. Europride has been advocating for equal rights for LGBTIQ people across Europe for many years, giving a voice to those who are often discriminated against because of their sexual orientation,” he explained. in a statement the EU ambassador to Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret.
In this sense, he pointed out that, given the “fundamental rights” promoted by the European club, they regret that Serbia has announced the cancellation. “I would appreciate more clarifications,” he has requested, adding that “they will closely monitor” the situation.
The Prime Minister of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, explained, for her part, that the State does not want to deny anyone the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, but the question is “what are the consequences of holding such a meeting in Serbia?” . Likewise, she has denied that it is a prohibition.
“It’s more of a request than telling them: ‘don’t walk.’ like this, but this September is a ‘perfect storm’ for us”, he explained, as reported by the Beta news agency.
According to the statement from the Serbian Executive, the current political situation in the region and the daily tensions that arise, as well as public order, peace and security of all citizens of our country, prevent the celebration of Europride.
“Certain extremist groups could use and abuse this event and Serbia’s willingness to organize it to further increase tensions and lead Serbia to instability,” the statement sent by the authorities read.
Meanwhile, the organizers of the parade have responded by assuring that the event will be held because the Executive has no right to prohibit it, on Sunday night supporters of the Serbian Orthodox Church took to the streets against the holiday.
Bishop Nikanor has welcomed the decision of the state authorities not to celebrate Europride, stating that it would be a “desecration” of the “country, the church and the family”, according to the Danas news portal.
Addressing the participants in the protests, he has cited Russian President Vladimir Putin as an example of the attitude towards the gay population, since he made the decision that “anomalies” should not be discussed in the country.
