WARSAW Jan. 15 (From the special envoy of , Laura García Martínez) –
The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, committed this Wednesday to the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, to take advantage of the rotating presidency that Poland assumes this semester in the Council of the EU to “accelerate as much as possible” the country’s accession process to the community club.
This was expressed by both in a joint press conference in Warsaw during which Tusk showed his determination to “break the deadlock seen in recent months” and work “unconditionally” with the rest of the partners in the Union to “accelerate the process as much as possible”, although he has avoided detail about the pace of work in Brussels and admitted that there is “a lot of work to do”.
Zelensky, for his part, has considered the role that Poland can play this semester as key during which, as the rotating presidency, it will set the work agenda of the Twenty-seven and has asked to be “very effective” in progress and confident in that a couple of negotiation chapters can be opened in these first months of 2025.
In what has been Zelensky’s third visit to Poland since the start of the war, discussions have focused both on the EU’s unwavering support for kyiv against Vladimir Putin’s regime, and on the impact of the imminent replacement in the White House or the security guarantees that Ukraine demands after the war. The bilateral summit also sought to advance the dispute that strains the bilateral relationship due to the exhumation of Polish victims during World War II.
“I want to make it clear once again, and I will say so in Europe, that an independent, sovereign Ukraine capable of deciding on its own destiny is not only a historical imperative but an undeniable condition for the security of Poland and all of Europe.” Tusk stressed, to emphasize that the Union’s commitment to the country at war is not a matter of a “moral obligation” but of defending “common interests.”
He has also noted Poland’s willingness to organize a new summit for the recovery of Ukraine in 2026, as a continuation of the one already held in Switzerland and the one that will take place this July in Italy.
