2025 will be a challenging year for consumer technology in Mexico

2025 will be a challenging year for consumer technology in Mexico

Hibi highlights that it is not a unique issue for Mexico or Latin America, but rather it is a global condition. According to Sony figures, the smartphone sensor division had an increase of 73% compared to the third quarter and is relevant, since some of its most important clients are companies like Apple or Xiaomi.

Music and cameras, the segments with the greatest potential for electronics

For the executive, cameras and photographic sensors are one of the categories with the greatest potential in the Latin American region, due to the young audience that has become increasingly interested in content creation.

The Sony executive highlights that a behavior they have detected is that creators begin the work stage with their smartphones, but quickly become professional through more competent teams.

Young people “want to learn more. That is very important for us, because they also want it to represent more investment, they want better cameras and that allows us to expand our business and that is why we see potential in that segment.”

Hibi is clear that audio is the segment with the greatest potential in the region due to the characteristics of the population. “Latinos cannot live without music. Our audio business is very big in Latin America,” he comments in relation to headphones and speakers.

Another product that has performed well for the company among younger audiences is video games. In the third quarter of 2024, PlayStation reported that it had already sold 65.5 million cumulatively.

This period represented a decrease of 22.5%. However, sales of the PS5 Pro were 19% of the total units sold and given its higher price it was a device that generated more profits for the company.

Due to the behavior of these categories, Hibi is certain that Mexico is one of the company’s most important markets. “I have a lot of confidence to develop business in Mexico.”

During CES 2025 Sony announced that its autonomous vehicle will finally go on sale this year for a price close to $850,000. According to Hibi, this exploration responds to the company’s need to enter new markets.

“We own image sensors,” says the executive, explaining that this is one of the reasons why they decided to take advantage of their experience in the market by incorporating it into the technology for the vehicle that they launched in collaboration with Honda. “Our field of business varies,” concludes the executive about how they are taking advantage of their components for other sectors.
