Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews block an Israeli highway to protest their recruitment

MADRID Jan 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews blocked a Tel Aviv road this Wednesday in front of an Israeli Army recruiting center to protest against the recent Supreme Court ruling that forces them to join mandatory military service, from which they were previously exempt for religious reasons. .

All of them have gathered on a road in front of the Tel Hashomer military base, in the Tel Aviv district, where there have been clashes with the security forces, who have come to the area to quell these demonstrations.

The protests have taken place after the Armed Forces have once again issued recruitment orders against thousands of ultra-Orthodox teenagers who did not appear at the stipulated centers after a first notification, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.

The Jerusalem Faction, a haredi extremist group consisting of about 60,000 members, is considered one of the most conservative factions of this community and generally speaks out against the recruitment of yeshiva students.

The authorities have been trying to recruit these young people for months, especially after the Court ruled in favor of this measure, considering that there are no solid legal reasons to support decades of exemptions from the recruitment of members of these communities.
