MADRID Jan 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least four women have been shot dead and two others have been injured in an attack carried out by armed men in Akobo county, in the South Sudanese state of Jonglei, where 25 others were kidnapped and later released, local authorities reported this Tuesday. .

The spokesperson for the Akobo commissioner, Stephen Lual, confirmed to the Eye Radio station that the attack “resulted in the kidnapping of 30 women” who were returning from fishing, of whom 25 were rescued by a group of armed youths from the town.

“On Sunday, a group of women were attacked near a village in Buong while returning from Ulang county. The attackers shot dead four people and injured two of the women. These women had gone to a nearby pond in Ulang to fishing,” explained Akobo County Commissioner Puok Nyang Tutjiek, speaking to Radio Tamazuj.

Tutjiek has condemned the assault, while denouncing that more than ten have occurred “since Christmas.” Furthermore, as stated, the perpetrators of these attacks belong to the Murle community originating from the Pibor Administrative Area, in the northeast of the country, where the majority of its members reside.

“Recently, some youth from Jonglei State marched and took over Pibor villages in response to repeated attacks by Murle youth. Therefore, these attacks in Jonglei State could also be seen as revenge,” he said. .
