The Peruvian justice system revoked on Tuesday a preventive detention order against a brother of President Dina Boluarte in an investigation for alleged influence peddling for appointing officials who helped gather members for a political party that supports the president.
An appeals chamber indicated that Nicanor Boluarte, 64 years old and one of the president’s 11 brothers, must go free at the calls of judges and prosecutors. The president’s brother had been on the run since November when another judge ordered three years of preventive detention.
The president’s brother is investigated for the alleged crimes of criminal organization, influence peddling and bribery. The Public Ministry indicates that Nicanor Boluarte had influence in the appointment of dozens of officials at the national level who are the links between the main social programs to help the poor in remote areas and the central government.
The prosecutor’s office specified that the officials appointed by Nicanor Boluarte had as an additional task the function of collecting political affiliation cards of citizens for a party in formation called “Citizens for Peru”, which sought to be registered before the Electoral Court. To register a political party, more than 531,000 citizen tokens are needed, according to the law.
According to the prosecutor’s office, with the officialization of that party the aim was also to accumulate political power, money and support for the president who does not have a legislative bench and has survived five requests for dismissal thanks to a coalition with groups of legislators.
Nicanor Boluarte’s legal defense has dismissed all of the Public Ministry’s accusations. The presidential office has not commented at this time.
