A former Kuwaiti Minister of the Interior and Defense sentenced to 14 years in prison for embezzlement of public funds

MADRID Jan 15 (EUROPA PRESS) –

This Tuesday, a special court in Kuwait sentenced former Minister of the Interior and Defense Talal Khaled al Sabá (2022-2023) to 14 years in prison, declaring him guilty of the crime of embezzlement of public funds.

The sentence, which can be appealed only once before the Court of Cassation, includes a fine of twenty million Kuwaiti dinars (about 63 million euros), as reported by the newspaper ‘Kuwait Times’.

The court has ruled that Al Sabá embezzled 9.5 million Kuwaiti dinars (about 28 million euros) from the Ministry of Defense and 500,000 (just over 1.5 million) from the Ministry of the Interior. Thus, the court has “requested” that these funds be returned to the ministerial portfolios.

The 57-year-old politician has also served as governor of the country’s capital (2019-2022) and has held various positions within the Kuwaiti oil sector.
