Wikipedia in Spanish brings together 2 million articles and remains a diverse and accessible source for everyone

Jan. 14 (Portaltic/EP) –

The free encyclopedia Spanish Wikipedia has surpassed a new milestone in its history by having 2 million articles, according to data recorded on January 2, an achievement that demonstrates the joint effort of users committed to free knowledge.

Wikipedia in Spanish is one of the most notable projects of the Wikimedia Foundation and promoted by Wikimedia Spain, a non-profit association that works to improve accessibility, use and participation on this platform and its sister projects.

Currently, Wikipedia receives around 26 million visits dailywhich is equivalent to approximately 312 visits per second; and the 100 most visited articles receive an average of 9,000 daily visits each, as the encyclopedia recently shared on the occasion of a new achievement celebrated among users who encourage its maintenance.

As announced, its Spanish version reached 2 million articles on January 2, which “not only guarantees that the Spanish-speaking community has access to a greater amount of informationbut also reinforces its mission of being a diverse and accessible source for the population”, as shared in a statement sent to Europa Press.

In this he has also recognized that, despite this growth, certain challenges remain in the representation of various groups within the encyclopedia. For example, in December 2024 only 23.46 percent of biographies on Spanish Wikipedia represent women. Likewise, there is still a notable lack of representation of indigenous communities and the LGBT+ community.

Finally, Wikipedia has recognized that, as the number of entries in the encyclopedia increases, there are more opportunities for experts in the different topics it addresses to collaborate and enrich the precision and depth of the content.
