MADRID Jan. 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Sudanese Army has denounced this Monday a drone attack against the Merowe dam, located in the north of the country, carried out by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) within the framework of the conflict that broke out in mid-April 2023.
The 19th Infantry Division of the Sudanese Armed Forces has indicated in a statement published on Facebook that the attack, attributed to the RSF, has left “losses”, although it has not detailed whether they are human or material.
Likewise, there has been a fire at the plant and power outages in several cities, including Port Sudan. The dam, located 350 kilometers north of Khartoum, covers around 40 percent of electricity consumption, according to the Sudan Tribune newspaper.
Sudan is mired in civil war following increased tensions over the integration of the RSF into the Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December 2022 to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition opened after the overthrow in 2019 of Omar Hasán al Bashir.
Since then, an estimated 11.5 million people have been internally displaced due to the conflict, according to United Nations data. Another 3.2 million have had to leave the African country.
