PETRONAS partnership ready to unleash the full potential of the Malaysian basin

Largest exhibition of Egyptian artifacts to open at Shanghai Museum

PETRONASthrough Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), in collaboration with Beicip Franlab Asia, has embarked on an integrated basin study to explore untapped resources in the Malay Basin, situated off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

The study leverages advanced 4D modeling and machine learning technologies to analyze subsurface architecture at basin and reservoir scales. It also focuses on predicting hydrocarbon migration and trapping by leveraging big data from the Malaysian Basin.

Since the 1970s, the Malaysian Basin has produced more than nine billion barrels of oil equivalent, earning it the title “super basin.” Recent exploration activities have uncovered significant deposits, highlighting the potential of the basin. Beyond hydrocarbons, the basin presents significant opportunities for carbon capture and storage (CCS), which positions it as a key player in sustainable energy development.

Azmir Zamri, Managing Director of Resource Exploration at MPM, said: “The Malaysian basin, often considered mature, continues to have significant untapped potential, as demonstrated by discoveries such as Bunga Aster and Bekok Deep. “Through our collaboration with Beicip Franlab Asia on the Integrated Basin Study and our AI-enabled geophysical initiatives with Earth Science Analytics, we aim to redefine what is possible and unlock new opportunities in this prolific region.”
