Yoon's legal team affirms that the president will not attend the first date of the impeachment trial against him

MADRID Jan 12 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The legal team of the president, Yoon Suk Yeol, dismissed by the South Korean Parliament after declaring martial law at the beginning of December, stated this Sunday that he will not appear before the Constitutional Court on the first date of the impeachment trial against him. scheduled for next January 14, for security reasons.

“We are concerned about our safety as the Senior Criminal Investigation Agency and the National Investigation Bureau of the National Police Agency continue to attempt to execute the arrest warrant, which is illegal and invalid, through illegal means,” Yoon said. Gap Geun, a member of the ousted president’s legal team, in statements reported by the Yonhap news agency.

Gap Geun has indicated that “for the president to appear in the constitutional trial, personal security issues must be resolved”: “Once they are resolved, he will appear at any time.”

Previously, the Constitutional Court scheduled a total of five arguments, starting with the date of the first formal argument on the 14th, until January 16, 21, 23 and February 4.

His words come after the South Korean Justice on Tuesday extended the deadline to arrest the ousted president after several unsuccessful attempts to arrest him at his official residence. The arrest warrants respond to Yoon’s refusal to comply with the summons issued against him to appear for what happened with martial law, an issue that has plunged the country into a serious political crisis.
