MADRID Jan. 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The vice spokesperson of the Taliban, Hamdullah Fitrat, confirmed this Saturday that they are in contact with the United States to try to reach an agreement to exchange prisoners.
“Talks have been held with the United States occasionally for a prisoner exchange, but no results have been reached,” he indicated, according to Afghan television Tolo News.
The objective, according to Fitrat, is to achieve the release of several Afghan citizens held in the United States. “Several years have passed since the United States imprisoned some of our fellow citizens for no reason and the Islamic Emirate is actively working for their release,” explained the Taliban spokesman.
Until now there was no official confirmation of these negotiations, although the newspaper ‘The Wall Street Journal’ had reported contacts with Kabul for the release of Americans detained in Afghanistan in exchange for at least one Guantanamo prisoner and even gave a name, Mohammad Rahim. al afghani
