The Sudanese Army announced this Saturday that it has already managed to enter the city of Uad Madani, the capital of the state of Gezira and the second largest town in the country, until now in the hands of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). now decimated into small “redoubts” that the military has begun to clear, in one of its most important victories since the outbreak of war in the African country.
The RSF took control of the city in December 2023, since then perpetrating serious human rights abuses, including murders, kidnappings and sexual violence. Attacks have increased since the October 20 defection of the group’s leader to Gezira, Abu Aqla Kikil.
The state has been the scene of bloody fighting since December, when the RSF, in response, they say, to a military surge, decided to launch a large-scale attack in a place where hundreds of thousands of people had fled to escape the war. in other parts of the country.
“The Sudanese Armed Forces and other regular forces are advancing on the Madani axis, capital of Gezira state, and have inflicted huge losses on the rebel militia,” according to a statement posted by the military on its Facebook page.
The spokesman for the Sudanese Armed Forces, Khalid al Aiser, reported shortly afterwards in a statement published on Facebook that Uad Madani is practically under its control but has not yet finished completely clearing the area.
“The Armed Forces Command congratulates our honorable people for the entry of our forces into Wad Madani this morning and they are now working to clear rebel strongholds within the city,” explained Al Aiser about one of the most notable operations. since the outbreak of the war between the Army and paramilitaries, which began in April 2023 and has completely devastated the country.
