The president of Somalia, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, will travel this Saturday to Ethiopia on a visit aimed at trying to resolve once and for all the diplomatic conflict that has confronted both countries and continue with the positive inertia generated with the reconciliation agreement reached under mediation. This agreement put an end, in principle, to the crisis caused by the pact signed between Ethiopia and the breakaway state of Somaliland on January 1, 2024, by which Ethiopians received access to the sea in exchange for recognizing the existence of Somaliland as an independent republic. .

However, the Government of Somalia denounced at the end of December an “unprovoked and unexpected” attack that was allegedly carried out by Ethiopian forces against “positions” of the Somali Army in the Dolow district, in the southwestern region of Gedo, days after both African countries signed the rapprochement agreement.

“The president will travel this Saturday at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed,” according to a statement from the Somali Presidency on its X social network account about a visit practically considered a surprise due to the size of the meeting, although Local media have already ventured this possibility in the last few hours.

“The talks with the Ethiopian leadership aim to strengthen bilateral relations and make progress on the priorities that both countries share,” the note adds.
