South Korea's presidential security chief calls for avoiding bloodshed

MADRID Jan. 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The head of South Korea’s presidential security, Park Chong Jun, called this Friday to avoid bloodshed when authorities try again to arrest the ousted president, Yoon Suk Yeol, for the declaration of martial law in early December.

“I think many people should be deeply concerned about the current situation, whether government agencies are fighting each other. There should be no physical confrontations or bloodshed under any circumstances,” he said in statements reported by the Yonhap news agency. .

Park, who has indicated that the investigation “should proceed in a manner consistent with the status of a sitting president,” made these statements before entering the Seoul Police investigation headquarters, where he was questioned for obstruction of official duties by allegedly blocking the entry of anti-corruption investigators from executing the arrest warrant against Yoon.

The South Korean Justice Department extended the deadline to detain Yoon on Tuesday, several days after security personnel at the presidential residence blocked agents from entering the premises, preventing his arrest. Following the failed arrest attempt, presidential security has reinforced the official residence by installing barbed wire and using buses to block access to the building.

These arrest warrants respond to Yoon’s refusal to comply with the summons issued against him to appear for what happened on December 3 after being accused of inciting insurrection and abuse of power for declaring martial law.
