MADRID Jan. 9 () –
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, asked the island’s inhabitants this Thursday to remain strong in their aspirations for independence at a time when the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has made clear his intentions to take over the territory.
“We must remain united to be prepared for a new future,” Egede said this Thursday at an event organized by the representative of Greenland in Copenhagen, according to the Bloomberg agency, in line with his New Year’s speech in which he stressed “giving the next step” and independence from Denmark.
To achieve this, Egede has the idea of holding an independence referendum if he wins the next elections in April. In the midst of all this, a Donald Trump who in recent days has expressed his ambitions for the island, the Panama Canal – without ruling out military means – and even Canada.
In the last few hours, several European leaders, such as the French president, Emmanuel Macron, or the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, have disfigured these words of the next tenant of the White House. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stressed that the island “belongs to the Greenlanders” and that “it is not for sale.”
