The Army kills fourteen suspected terrorists after "neutralizing" an attack in central Mali

MADRID Jan. 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Malian Army has claimed this Thursday to have “neutralized” a “terrorist attack” against the town of Diangassagou, located in the center of the country, and has stated that the clashes in the area have resulted in the death of at least fourteen the assailants.

“The ground response combined with air support has neutralized fourteen terrorists at the scene of the fighting, where nine motorcycles and other war materials have been recovered,” he said, before specifying that the assault was carried out during the afternoon of Wednesday. .

Likewise, he stated that a series of bombings carried out shortly afterwards 15 kilometers south of Diangassagou, in the Mopti region, made it possible to “destroy a column of terrorists who were retreating”, without providing a balance of victims.

“The General Staff of the Army applauds the speed of the reaction of the units involved,” he concluded in a statement on his account on the social network Facebook, in which he made no mention of casualties among the military. For now there is no claim of responsibility for the attack.

The African country is led by a military junta established after the coups d’état perpetrated in August 2020 and May 2021, both headed by Assimi Goita, current transitional president, who has led a rapprochement with Russia while distancing himself so much from France and Western governments, including its departure – along with Burkina Faso and Niger – from the ranks of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
