NGOs rescue more than 230 people during operations carried out in the Mediterranean in 24 hours

The rescue ships of the NGOs Sos Mediterranée and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the ‘Ocean Viking’ and the ‘Geo Barents’ respectively, have announced the rescue of some 236 people during seven rescue operations carried out in the last few hours in the Central Mediterranean.

The rescue ship ‘Geo Barents’ has rescued 176 people from the waters of the central Mediterranean in four rescue operations that began last Saturday evening with the rescue of eleven migrants sighted in a small boat that had left the coast from Libya, the NGO has made known on its Twitter account.

As night fell, the ‘Geo Barents’ rescued another 25 people, including five minors, also in international waters near the Libyan coast.

In the early hours of this Sunday, the ship’s crew managed to rescue 61 more people in an area close to the previous sightings, including 21 minors “and very young children,” according to the NGO.


Finally, in the last few hours, the organization has reported its largest rescue: 79 people saved from the waters, including 32 minors.

For its part, the ‘Ocean Viking’ has carried out three other operations that have resulted in the rescue of 17, 15, and 47 people, respectively. Counting the rescues in recent days, the ship now has 466 survivors on board and is now sailing awaiting a safe harbor.
