MADRID Jan. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The military junta of Chad denounced this Wednesday a “failed destabilization attempt” after an intense exchange of gunfire was heard in the capital of the African country, N’Djamena, inside the presidential palace.
“The situation is under control. It was a small incident that occurred,” stressed the Chadian government spokesman, Abderraman Kulamalá, adding that the security forces remain mobilized and that the threat has already been “eradicated.”
Although the Chadian spokesperson – who is also Foreign Minister – has not specified who was behind the attack, several media outlets point to members of the Boko Haram terrorist group. Unverified images of the attack are already circulating on social networks.
Chad is now under the control of a military junta led by transitional president Mahamat Idriss Déby. The country faces recurring attacks by Boko Haram and its splinter group, Islamic State in West Africa (ISWA), which operate in the Lake Chad area, situated on the border between Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
