Qatar and Jordan criticize Netanyahu over several maps showing Arab territories as part of Israel

MADRID Jan. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The authorities of Qatar and Jordan criticized the Government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this Wednesday for the publication of several maps showing areas of these countries, as well as Lebanon, Syria and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, as part of the “great Israel”.

Qatar, which appears as a mediating country to achieve a ceasefire to the attacks in the Gaza Strip, has warned that this type of publications “undermine the opportunity to achieve peace” in the Middle East region.

Thus, the Qatari Foreign Ministry has highlighted in a statement the importance of the international community “facing its moral and legal responsibilities to pressure the Israeli occupation and ensure that it complies with United Nations resolutions.”

For its part, the Jordanian Government has also condemned these maps, which speak of the supposed “historical Israel” but include territories that are currently in other Arab countries. “These are inflammatory statements by extremists who are part of the Israeli Government and who perpetuate violence and destabilization,” warned Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sufian Qudá.

On Tuesday, Palestinian authorities stated that these maps represent a “flagrant violation of all international resolutions and laws.” “Israeli occupation policies and settler attacks require strong measures by the international community to prevent the Palestinian people from being subjected to war and destruction,” he said.

It is not the first time that the Israeli Government has raised controversy with a map of this type. In September, Netanyahu showed a map of the country during a press conference that includes the West Bank as part of its territory.

The offensive unleashed more than a year ago by Israel against the Gaza Strip after the attacks perpetrated by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) against Israeli soil has so far resulted in 45,885 Palestinian deaths.
