Between January and June, Bolivia exported 434 tons of lithium carbonate, for 23.5 million dollars, reported this Friday the private NGO Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE), specifying that 100% goes to the markets of China, Russia and USA.
According to IBCE data, Bolivia, a world power in mineral reserves, exported a total of 1,019 tons of lithium in 2021, for almost 10 million dollars: 44% to Russia, 40% to China and 16% to the US.
Despite its huge reserves, its export volumes in 2021 were far behind Chile ($883 million), China ($99 million), the Netherlands ($54 million), and South Korea ($46 million). said the IBCE. Bolivia has mining agreements, mainly with Moscow and Beijing.
The Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade used data from the state-run National Institute of Statistics of Bolivia, and figures from the specialized site Trade Map.
The Bolivian government certified its lithium reserves at about 21 million tons, mainly in the Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, a natural wonder with the highest lithium reserves on the planet.
Bolivia, from the government of the leftist Evo Morales (2006-2019), took steps to industrialize its lithium reserves, with ups and downs.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard arrived in Bolivia earlier this month and said that his country intends to take advantage of Bolivian “experience” to industrialize its lithium reserves.
