Finnish authorities repair two more damaged submarine cables in the Baltic

MADRID Jan. 6 () –

Two other underwater telecommunications cables that were damaged in the Baltic Sea on December 25 have been repaired after Finland opened an investigation into sabotage of EstLink2, which connects Finnish territory with Estonia.

The teleoperator Elisa has reported that the weather conditions had made cable repair work difficult. The cuts have had no impact on telecommunications between Finland and Estonia, according to the Yle network.

In the incident – for which the oil tanker ‘Eagle S’, flying the Cook Islands flag and currently detained in the coastal city of Porvoo, is being investigated – four cables were damaged. The Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) has already inspected the ship.

Likewise, the Finnish Police have imposed a ban on the eight crew members of the ‘Eagle S’, which was supposedly transporting gasoline from Russia to Egypt, from leaving the country. Authorities suspect that the boat’s anchor may have damaged the cables.

It is not the first incident of this type that has been recorded in the area and concern is growing about the security risks that the so-called Russian ‘ghost fleet’ may pose, a series of freighters now used by Russia to avoid sanctions on its main sources. of income in the context of the war in Ukraine.
